Hubble Deep Space Field

Recently, I was reading about our incredible universe, this work of God’s hands.  Here’s an amazing fact I learned. This just blows my mind.

Imagine yourself looking at the night sky. You take a single grain of sand, and you hold it at arms-length above you, blocking out a tiny portion of the night sky above you.

If you were to train the Hubble Telescope on that portion of night sky that you blocked out, do you know what you would see? The image above shows what the Hubble Telescope found. Not just hundreds of more stars; but hundreds of more galaxies! Each galaxy contains an estimated one billion stars!

And this is truly amazing.  As God was explaining to Job about creation, He talked about how he made the heavens and the earth.  And then, almost as a afterthought, he added, “Oh yeah, I made all the stars too.”  This image displays a part of this “afterthought” never before visible.

Truly, the heavens declare the glory of God!

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.  There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard (Psalm 19:1-3).

The Creation Of Man

Here’s an interesting bit of Genesis creation information that I found intriguing. God created everything in six days by the power of His Word. He spoke the universe into existence. But when, it came time to create Adam, he formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life (Genesis 2:7). Wow! God got his hands dirty when he created his masterpiece. He used more than just the spoken word. He acted.

And when he created Eve, God put Adam into a deep sleep, and removed a piece from Adam’s side (Genesis 2:21). Most translations render this word as rib. However, the Hebrew word here, “tsela”, means “curved chamber.” While the rib cage is a “curved chamber,” I believe that God was after something else from Adam. In my studies and reading, it seems that “curved chamber” refers more to a piece of Adam on the cellular level. I believe that God was after one of Adam’s cells, specifically his DNA. And He use that to create woman.

So, God took this “curved chamber” and closed up the flesh at that place (Genesis 2:21).  He performed an act of surgery to create Eve. God again was “hands-on” in the creation of His masterpiece: Man and Woman.

I believe that speaks to the level of love and care He has for each one of us. He didn’t just speak us into existence, he lovingly formed us into his image. That speaks volumes about our worth as His creation.

"The Spirit Of The Fruit"

It continually amazes me the many lessons we can learn from our children.  Recently, God taught Heather and I something about our own lives, and he used our son to do it.

Titus is our four-year-old.  A few weeks ago, his Junior Church teacher taught him in such a way that it stuck.  I need to talk to her… and find out how she did that.  Hmmmmm…

As we headed home from church that day, Heather asked Titus what he learned about.  He told us he learned about the “Spirit of the Fruit.”  And we found out what aspect the next morning.

That next morning, Titus woke up, and came out of his bedroom.  He demanded of Heather, “I want breakfast now!… Oh yeah, patience.”

Wow!  I can learn a lesson from my four-year-old son.  How many adults do I know, including myself, who fail to remind themselves to apply Scriptural principles?  Sometimes God uses inexplicable means to teach or re-teach me what he wants me to know.  I just hope that these principles stick to me as well as they seem to stick to our young children.

Later that day, Titus was being demanding again.  Heather reminded him about patience.  His response?  “I don’t have any of that in my body right now.”

An Unprecedented Opportunity!

Joining The Ministry Of The Creation Truth Foundation

An opportunity of incredible proportions has come our way. Many of you many know of the Creation Truth Foundation and Dr. G. Thomas Sharp. I have had the opportunity over the last three years to study under Dr. Sharp in one of the Institute for Biblical Worldview Studies Cadres. These Cadres meet twice a year for a week of intense worldview formation, studying Genesis 1-11. Over the course of these studies, I have become convinced that without a proper view of these early chapters of Genesis, one cannot have a proper understanding of the rest of the Bible.

Creation Truth Foundation

As a result of my interest and passion for Creationism, Dr. Sharp has offered me a position with the Creation Truth Foundation. My role there will be to work closely with Matt Miles in the area of student worldview development, a crucial area in today’s youth ministry.  Our division is called the  S.W.A.T. Team — Student Worldview Advanced Training.

One of the reasons for my sense of urgency in this is our world’s biblical illiteracy. Woodward Kroll, in Taking Back The Good Book, says,

“One of the consequences of Biblical illiteracy is that those searching for answers to the great questions of life are left clueless. Without God’s eternal Word, they have no place to go for certain truth…. If we don’t have a reliable source of information, how will we know that any answer to any question is the right one?”

An Unnamed Blog

Here we go.  This is my first, bumbling attempt at a blog.  I guess we will see just how well this goes.  As with most new attempts at journaling in my life, my guess is this will last or a few weeks or days, and then fade away, left by the wayside, abandoned for reasons unknown… unless you can count procrastination as a reason.

The funny thing is, I spent more time this evening searching for and editing the perfect photo for my header.  The shot of the mountains that you see above is a photo I took about sunset while we were on our family vacation in Como, Colorado.  I set up my camera and tripod in an overgrown field at Camp Como, fighting of mosquitoes the size of my hand (ok, maybe they weren’t that big…).  As the sun set, the mountains turned various shades of purple.  It was worth the wait.

As I waited for the light to fade just the right amount, I was overcome with a sense of awe at God’s creation.  And to think, this work of his hands, this was made for me.  Overpowering thoughts cascaded through my mind as I sat in wonder at God’s majesty.  Simply amazing…
