One of my favorite reading topics is parenting. When you have a family as large as mine, any help you can get is great. I’ve found that most of the time, the things we deal with in raising our kids have all been dealt with before. And when they write about it, others can learn about it. I’ve got a shelf full of great parenting resources, and am always on the lookout for more.
Recently, I ran across a series of books Gregory E. Lang. These are simple books; really just a series of reminders. The temptation is to sit down and read through it and move on. But don’t do that…
If you let these simple truths bounce around in your brain for a while, you might just end up a better parent because of it.
Lang has a whole series of these, of which I only have two or three. You can read some of my favorites from Why A Daughter Needs A Dad here. Last night I sat down and read Why A Son Needs A Dad.
Here are a few of my favorite entries. A son needs a dad…
- To teach him to be a gracious winner as well as a gracious loser.
- To take him camping.
- To teach him to apologize for reckless words.
- To listen when others have grown tired of listening.
- To tell him that he is proud of him.
- To show him how to control his temper.
- To go with him on imaginary adventures.
- So that he will have at least one hero he can depend on.
- To show him how to be a good husband.
- Who knows how to have fun.
- Who will discipline him firmly and fairly, while loving him relentlessly.
- Who will be there for him when he needs help.
- To tell him often that he is loved.
- Who will help his mother.
- To teach him to be respectful of women.
- To teach him how to be a gentleman.
- To help him find his way.
- To teach him that family is more important than work.
- To show him patience.
- To build a loving house on a foundation of wisdom and understanding.
- To show him how to love others, even when it is hard.
- To teach him to be accountable for his wrongdoings.
- To lead him toward faith.
- To teach him to recognize the truth and reward it.
- Who will show him affection without hesitation.
- Who is willing to make sacrifices for his family.
- To teach him that forgiving is always the right thing to do.
- To be the role model for the father he will become.
- To teach him to be honest at all times.
- Because without him he will have less in his life than he deserves.
There are a lot more great reminders in this book than just these. These are the ones that stood out to me. Some of them stood out because Titus and Jadon need that truth. Others stood out because I need it. In some ways, maybe the book should have been titled Why A Dad Needs A Son To Need A Dad…
What about you? What truths do you need reminded of occasionally (or frequently)? Why does your son need a dad? Why do you (or why does your husband) need a dad?
List them out in the comments. I want to hear your thoughts on this.
