In 1969, The Brady Bunch series premiered on ABC-TV. And in 2006, Facebook was opened to everyone at least 13 years or older with a valid email address.

And in 1957, the first-ever underground nuclear explosion was detonated in an underground tunnel at the Nevada Test Site, a 1,375 square mile research center located 65 miles north of Las Vegas.

On this day in history: In 1609, English explorer Henry Hudson sailed down what is now known as the Hudson River. In 1873, the first practical typewriter was sold to customers. And in 1940, the Lascaux cave paintings were discovered near Montignac, France, by four teenagers who stumbled upon the ancient artwork after following their dog down a narrow entrance into a cavern.

Making Cold Brew Coffee The Easy Way – One of my favorite ways of making coffee is the cold brew method. This generally results in a cup that is less acidic and somewhat more smooth in taste. Watch A Blowtorch Melt A Jawbreaker – This is one of those things where I wonder, “Why didn’t I think of that?” It’s mesmerizing and fascinating and I want to try it.

The Lost Squadron – This is the story of a squadron of P-38 Lightnings and B-17 Bombers, the Flying Fortress bombers, that crash landed on Greenland’s east coast and were left behind, eventually to be covered with ice. It’s an incredible historical event that was largely forgotten until someone attempted a salvage mission.

The Boston Molasses Flood – Have you ever heard of this event? This is not something that comes up in history class. It’s a very interesting part of early 20th century history.

On this day in history: In 1848, the dental chair was patented by M. Waldo Hanchett. In 1877, Thomas Edison wrote to the president of the Telegraph Company in Pittsburgh, PA. The letter stated that the word, “hello” would be a more appropriate greeting than “ahoy” when answering the telephone. In 1911, the product Crisco was introduced by Procter & Gamble Company. And in 1969, the Woodstock festival opened in Bethel, New York, and created a cultural pivot point in American history.

Newly Opened Sections Of Central Park – Central Park is an amazing piece of New York City. I visited once, when I was about 18 or 19. In such a large city, maintaining a relatively small parcel of land is an important job. But when you discover that there are whole sections of the park that have been closed for years, that is simple astounding.

On this day in history: In 1832, the first recorded railroad accident in U.S. history occurred when four people were thrown off a vacant car on the Granite Railway near Quincy, Massachusetts. In 1854, the paper collar was patented by Walter Hunt, and in 1871, Seth Wheeler patented perforated wrapping paper. And, in 1946, the U.S. detonated an atomic bomb at Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. It was the first underwater test of the device.
